Malaria in South Africa

Between December 2012 and January 2013, five confirmed cases of P.falciparum malaria with one death have been reported in residents of Gauteng province. The cases gave no history of travel to areas with risk of malaria transmission.

Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa but highly urbanised, containing the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Gauteng is also the most populous province in South Africa.
