The Ministry of Health has reported a suspected outbreak of dengue fever in the Seychelles. During the week beginning 4 February 2013, 12 suspected cases of dengue fever were identified in La Digue and Mahe. One of the first samples tested has identified a probable case although a definative confirmatory report is awaited.
Recent heavy rains have caused flooding in the areas of Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue which has resulted in an increase in mosquitoes and mosquito breeding sites. The health authorities are alerting the local population and public health measures are in place to control the situation.
Advice for Travellers
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
