An increase in the number of cases of pertussis has been reported nationwide in New Zealand. During 2012, 5938 cases were reported; an increase of 197% compared to 1996 cases reported in 2011. Between early December 2012 and early January 2013, 520 new cases (254 confirmed) have been reported. The most affected areas are Canterbury, Waikato, Hutt Valley and Wellington.

Advice for Travellers
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of pertussis vaccine in accordance with the UK schedule. The JCVI does not recommend pertussis boosters for adults in the UK.
