An outbreak of typhoid fever has been reported by the media in eastern Syria. The outbreak is occurring in the opposition-held region of Deir al-Zor province and an estimated 2500 individuals are thought to be infected.
The source of infection is contaminated drinking water from the Euphrates river. Local people in the area have resorted to drinking river water as a shortage of fuel and electricity has meant that water pumps are not in use.
