Dengue Fever in Kenya

Health officials have reported an outbreak of dengue fever in Mandera District, North Eastern province, along the Ethiopian and Somali borders. Around 300 cases have been recorded since the outbreak began in January 2013. Three suspected dengue deaths have been recorded, and it is thought that more cases have gone unreported.

In 2011, an outbreak of dengue fever infected up to 5000 people in Kenya.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
