Dengue Fever in Solomon Islands (Update)

The outbreak of dengue fever reported last month in Solomon Islands is escalating. As of 5 April 2013, a total of 2226 suspected cases have been recorded, of those, 588 have been confirmed as dengue virus infection.

More than 90% of cases have been reported in Honiara, the national capital on the island of Guadalcanal. Eighty five cases have been recorded in Western province, 16 in Malaita,10 in Temotu, four cases in Choiseul and one reported in Isabel province respectively.

The outbreak is active and new cases are increasing. The health authorities are working with partners to contain the outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
