Avian Influenza (Human) in Bangladesh

The first death from avian influenza virus infection (H5N1) has been reported from eastern Bangladesh.

The case was a 2-year-old boy from Chauddogram sub-district of Comilla, 96 km from Dhaka. The child did not present with typical symptoms of avian influenza infection and samples were sent to CDC in the US where the virus was confirmed; he died on 18 February 2013. There was a strong link with backyard poultry deaths. No other cases were identified following contact tracing.

This is the first human case of avian influenza to be reported in 2013. A total of 7 human cases have been reported in Bangladesh since the outbreak began.
