A fatal case of avian influenza virus infection (H5N1) has been reported in Vietnam. This is the first fatal case since January 2012, and the first case in 2013. The case was a 4-year-old boy from the southern province of Dong Thap; further information is unavailable at present.
A total of 123 human cases of avian influenza have been reported in Vietnam with 61 deaths. Of those, 112 cases and 57 deaths were recorded between 2003/2004.
