The Ghana Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (GFELTP) has reported an outbreak of yellow fever in Jirapa district, in the northwestern corner of Upper West Region in Ghana.
The Jirapa District Health Director reported the first case on 7 February 2013. A further 10 cases were reported between 7 February and 4 March 2013. Serology samples were taken from all suspected cases and sent to the National Public Health Reference Laboratory for confimation. Three of the suspected cases have since died.
This report does not mention any plans for an immunisation campaign in the area.
Advice for Travellers
Yellow fever is a risk for travellers to Ghana and vaccination is recommended unless contraindicated. Travellers should also be advised to avoid mosquito bites.
