Yellow Fever in Niger

29 April 2013

The WHO has informed the Federal Ministry of Health of a confirmed case of yellow fever in Diffa, Republic of Niger, a community sharing the borders of 2 states (Borno and Yobe) in Nigeria.

An alert was sent to the Disease and Surveillance Notification Officers at the border of Local Government Areas (LGAs) (i.e. Abadam and Mobbar in Borno state and Yusufari and Yunusari in Yobe state) and the 2 state's epidemiologists to increase surveillance for yellow fever in the border communities to Diffa.

Reports received so far indicate that active yellow fever surveillance, including public awareness creation, are ongoing in the LGAs, especially in the communities bordering Diffa.

Advice for Travellers

There is a risk of yellow fever in certain areas south of the Sahara Desert and vaccination is advised for travellers to these parts (unless contraindicated). There is also a certificate requirement for all travellers over 1 year of age. Travellers should take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
