An outbreak of dengue fever has been reported in the city of Mombasa on the east coast of the country. The last identified outbreak of dengue fever in Mombasa was in 1982.
As of 26 Apr 2013, 83 of 148 (56%) blood samples collected from residents of Mombasa who visited health facilities with dengue-like illness have tested positive for dengue virus infection. Age range for confirmed cases was 12-56 years old; 56% were male. No dengue associated deaths have been reported to date.
As a response to controlling the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has embarked on a number of activities. The response measures being conducted include awareness sessions for health workers and community members, active case finding and vector control.
Advice for Travellers
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
