The Health Ministry has reported an outbreak of meningococcal meningitis in Guinea.
Since the beginning of 2013, a total of 379 cases, including 40 related deaths have been recorded in 19 of Guinea's 33 regions, including the capital Conakry. The meningitis serotype responsible for the outbreak has not been stated.
Guinea lies in the meningitis belt, an area which covers 25 sub-Saharan African countries where the incidence of the disease is particularly high.
Advice for Travellers
Quadrivalent meningococcal meningitis vaccines is available for those considered to be at risk, especially if mixing with the local population during the high risk season; generally between Dec-Jun.
