A fatal case of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has been reported from Turkey. The case was a man from the province of Tokat in the mid Black Sea region of Anatolia. The man was bitten by a tick whilst attending to his animals in the fields; he removed the tick but did not seek medical attention immediately.
This is the first fatal case of CCHF this year (2013) in Turkey; however, some cases are currently receiving treatment for CCHF in hospital. According to data released by the Ministry of Health, 174 people died as a result of CCHF in Turkey between 2002 and 2012.
Advice for Travellers
There is no safe and effective vaccine available for use in humans. Avoidance of tick bites is the main preventive measure, especially during summer months when they are most active - usually Mar to Oct in the Middle East, Europe and Asia.
