An outbreak of cholera has been reported from Hoima district in west Uganda. The outbreak began in mid April 2013, and to date 56 cases including 3 deaths have been recorded. A lack of suitable sanitation is thought to be the cause of the outbreak.
The district health office has reported that although the disease broke out at Runga Landing Site on Lake Albert, it had spread to Kababwa, Waki, and Kapaapi villages in Kigorobya Sub-county.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
