Measles in Sudan

15 May 2013

An outbreak of measles has been reported by the media in the Bahr El Arab area of East Darfur state in the south of the country, bordering South Sudan. The outbreak was first identified 2 months ago.

The health authorities responded with a partial vaccination campaign, however, the infection has since re-emerged. The areas worst affected are Sibdu, Tagatiq, Hiraiz, Butah, Ihaimir, Abuasal, Jalal, WarrellFitis, El Malam, and Silwajy.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
