Cholera in India

07 August 2013

Cholera outbreaks have been reported from three states in India:

Maharashtra state in the west of the country has reported cholera in the city of Mumbai for the first time in five years. A total of 52 cases have been recorded, 12 in June and 42 in July 2013. Cholera has been confirmed in all cases by culture.

In the east of the country, Orissa state reports an outbreak of cholera in Rayagada district. Nine out of ten samples collected since 27 July 2013, tested positive for Vibrio cholerae bacterium. The situation is being closely monitored.

Gujarat state in the west of the country bordering Maharashtra state, has reported an outbreak of cholera in two villages. The villages of Boria and Silvai are located in Petland tehsil. Around 261 suspected cases have been recorded in Boria, of which two have been confirmed as cholera. Fifty suspected cases have been recorded in Silvai, of which one has been confirmed as cholera. The source of the outbreak has been confirmed as contaminated drinking water following the rains.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
