Hepatitis A in the United States

12 August 2013

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that the source of a multi-state outbreak of hepatitis A has been traced to pomegranate seeds imported from Turkey. As of 1 Aug 2013, 158 cases of hepatitis A have been reported from 10 states in the US.

The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration determined the major outbreak strain of hepatitis A virus belonged to genotype 1B, which is rarely seen in the Americas but is found in North Africa and the Middle East.

The genotype was identified in a 2013 outbreak of hepatitis A virus infections in Europe connected with frozen berries and a 2012 British Columbia outbreak linked to a frozen berry blend with pomegranate seeds from Egypt. There is no evidence that the outbreaks are related to the ongoing US outbreak.
