The media has reported on an outbreak of cholera in northeastern Bakhshan province of Afghanistan. More than 1400 cases of cholera have been recorded and one 19-year-old woman from Derayam district died as a result. A further 25 cases are said to be in a critical condition.
The Public Health department blames a lack of safe drinking water as the cause of the outbreak. Mobile health care teams have been deployed to the area to provide treatment for infected individuals and international non-governmental organizations including WHO, UNICEF and Merlin are also assisting the health teams in providing medical care.

Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
