Measles in Central African Republic

20 August 2013

A measles epidemic is affecting the entire country of Central African Republic (CAR). The outbreak began in 2012, and due to political unrest and a lack of stable health infrastucture, no organised action has been made to contain the epidemic since December 2012.

The Health Minister has called for the interim government to mobilize urgent measures to minimize the impact of the epidemic. Medecins Sans Frontieres warned in early July 2013, that the country was on the verge of a public health catastrophe.

A vaccination campaign took place in the capital Bangui in May 2013, and reached 122 000 children. However, around 1.5 million childrenĀ living in the heart of the country (for the most part) have not been vaccinated against measles.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
