Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever in Uganda

21 August 2013

The Ministry of Health has reported a laboratory confirmed case of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in northern Uganda.

The case is a male adult farmer from Baroma village, Atece Parish in Omot Sub-county in Agago District. His condition was identified on 8 Aug 2013 presenting with a high fever, general body weakness, muscle pains, and bleeding from some areas of the body. He was admitted to Kalongo Hospital on 10 Aug 2013, and isĀ  undergoing supportive treatment. Investigation into 3 other deaths in Omot sub-county in relation to this case is underway.

In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has reactivated the task force to coordinate all responses. A district task force has, in addition, been organised to coordinate the local responses.

Advice for Travellers

CCHF is a low risk for the average traveller; it is spread by infected ticks from a reservoir usually in animals such as cattle, sheep and goats. Avoidance of tick bites is essential in risk areas.
