Typhoid and Hepatitis A in Syria

29 August 2013

The media has reported on a WHO statement in Syria.

Typhoid fever has broken out in an opposition-held region of Syria. A shortage of fuel and electricity has meant that water supply pumps have been disabled, forcing individuals to use contaminated water from the Euphrates River. An estimated 2500 individuals in northeastern Deir al-Zor province are thought to be infected. No confirmed deaths from typhoid fever have been reported.

An outbreak of hepatitis A is also spreading in Aleppo and Idlib as well as in crowded shelters for displaced persons in Damascus. This is a result of a total breakdown in water and sanitation systems; between 50-70 individuals share a toilet in many shelters in Damascus.
