Malaria in Saudi Arabia

28 May 2013

The media has reported on the malaria situation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Health Ministry has recorded 2788 cases of malaria since 2011, of those, approximately 97% are considered to be imported cases.

Most cases occur during the rainy seasons and numbers begin to decline at the beginning of March with the lowest  being reported between May to September.

The worst affected areas are the plains of Mekkah province and Jizan province in the west of the country which are not covered by the control programme due to poor roads, communication difficulties and lack of manpower.
