Rabies in Namibia

02 September 2013

The Directorate of Veterinary Services has initiated a rabies vaccination campaign in the eastern Kavango region following the death of two individuals from rabies in the last two months.

The cases were reported at the Nyangana District Hospital, with the incidents occurring at the Shambungu village, situated around 160 km east of Rundu.

The vaccination campaign will start in the Kavango East region on 2 Sep 2013, targetting 31 communities and then move on to the Kavango West region.

Advice for Travellers

Namibia is considered a high risk destination by WHO. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk. Travellers to Namibia should avoid animal contact and report any bites for medical assessment.
