An outbreak of cholera has been reported in the locality of Banfele, in the prefecture of Kouroussa in Upper Guinea. The outbreak began on 3 Aug 2013 and has caused the mobilization of health services, which have deployed a logistics team to halt the spread of the disease.
Rehydration solutions have been distributed to the populations of Banfele, and latrines and other wells used by the inhabitants have been disinfected. Cholera is also being reported in Low Guinea and in Middle Guinea, in the prefecture of Mamou, 150 cases have been reported in these 2 regions since January 2013.
The Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has conducted awareness campaigns in the areas which have experienced cases of cholera.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
