05 September 2013

An emergency operation is under way in the Salamat region of Chad following an steep rise in malaria cases.

The charitable organisation, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) reports that the number of new malaria cases rose from 1228 in the first week of August to 14 021 by the end of the month. Malaria cases normally increase during the July to November rainy season in Chad, however, the sudden increase is unusual.

More than 80% of individuals seeking attention from MSF are suffering from malaria, normally it is 30%-40% at this time of year.
