An outbreak of cholera has been reported in the Tillaberi region of Niger which lies in the far west of the country bordering Mali.
Around 248 cases have been recorded including 31 cases among Mali refugees in Mangaize and Tabareybarey camps. The United Nations is working to contain the outbreak in Mangaize camp where 15 000 refugees are housed.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
