The Ministry of Health has reported an outbreak of cholera in Oyo state in southwestern Nigeria. Eight deaths have been recorded and ten individuals have required admission to hospital for treatment. The outbreak was confirmed on 2 September 2013.
The Health Ministry has implemented an awareness campaign, highlighting the importance of personal hygiene and safe drinking water.
Cholera outbreaks occur regularly during the rainy season in Nigeria, when wells become contaminated with sewage. The rainy season usually runs from April to September.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
