Cholera in Rwanda

16 September 2013

An outbreak of cholera has been reported from Nkombo Island, which is one of 18 sectors that make up Rusizi district, Western Province of Rwanda. At least 26 cases have been recorded since August 2013, however, many more are at risk as only 30% of the local population have access to safe water. Those without water have been sourcing supplies from Lake Kivu which is thought to be contaminated.

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
