The Ministry of Health has reported an increase in the number of cholera cases in Mexico following weeks of heavy rain.
Most cases (33) have been reported in the state of Hidalgo in the east of the country. Two cases have also been identified in Mexico City. Health officials report that the strain of cholera detected in Mexico is the same as that which is affecting Cuba and the Domincan Republic. Surveillance of water treatment plants has been intensified and an awareness campaign has been launched to educated the public on prevention.
Advice for Travellers
Cholera is a low risk for most travellers to the popular destinations of Mexico and vaccination would not normally be recommended.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
