The Department of Health have reported 4246 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) so far this year (2013). This is compared with 2216 cases in 2012 and 1370 cases in 2011. The viral infection mainly affects children, but health services have recently been seeing increasing cases in adults.
Advice for Travellers
HFMD is a common viral illness which spreads rapidly among children in particular; outbreaks most often occur in children's nurseries and daycare centres. Transmission is via direct contact with nose and throat secretions and faeces of an infected individual and by aerosol droplet spread. Personal hygiene and handwashing is paramount in reducing transmission of the virus.
