Malaria in India

The media has reported on the number of malaria cases in India for the January-July period of 2013. 

The state of Orissa has reported the highest number of malaria cases (89 466) followed by Chhattisgarh state (31 940). Jharkhand state reported 26 489 cases, Maharashtra state 17 060 cases followed by Gujarat, Assam, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh.

Maharashtra state, which reported 17 060 cases of malaria, recorded the highest number of deaths at 24 followed by Orissa (20). No fatalities due to malaria were reported from any other state.

Two hospitals in the city of Chandigarh, northern India have reported an increase in the number of cases of falciparum malaria in 2013. Chandigarh serves as the capital city for both Punjab and Haryana states in the far north of the country. The neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh has also reported an increase in falciparum malaria.
