Two cases of canine rabies have been reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The cases concern two four-month-old puppies from the same litter which were imported from Bulgaria on 5 October to The Netherlands. The first signs of rabies occurred on 10 October and consisted of fever and paralysis. This dog was euthanized on 18 October and the sister dog was also euthanized. The dogs had visited Zaandam, Noord-Holland and Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland whilst in The Netherlands.
Humans in contact with the dogs during the last two weeks are under investigation and will be treated by the health services as appropriate.

Advice for Travellers
The Netherlands is considered by WHO as a 'No Risk' country for rabies and the status remains unchanged. Travellers should always report any bite for proper medical assessment.
