The Ministry of Health (MoH) has issued a press release to inform the public about suspected cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus infection recently detected in Brunei Darussalam.
This is the first report of JE infection in Brunei. However, since 17 October 2013, a total of 12 suspected cases have been identified. Of these, 9 cases are from the Belait District, 2 from Tutong and one from Brunei-Muara.
Following further investigation, only 3 cases from the Belait District have been laboratory confirmed as JE virus infection.
The MoH will monitor the situation and take necessary measures including informing the public of any developments.
Advice for Travellers
JE vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk. Travellers should take steps to avoid mosquito bites, particularly in rural, rice growing areas.
