Cholera in Togo

An outbreak of cholera in Togo was first identfied on 30 August 2013. Cases were first reported in Lomé municipality in the Maritime region of Togo. The outbreak has spread to six of the seven districts in the Maritime region as well as the Central region.

As of 28 October 2013, a total of 95 cases and 4 deaths have been reported. The continued rainfall in the regions and poor standards of hygiene are prolonging containment of the outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
