An outbreak of typhoid fever has been reported by the media in the Wagoora area of Barmulla district, north Kashmir in the northwestern region of India. More than 300 suspected cases have been recorded and cases are increasing. On average, 20 suspected cases are treated daily at various health facilities.
The source of the outbreak is thought to be the Nalla Ningli river which is the main source of drinking water for many villages in the area. In the past five years this source of potable water has become contaminated during the rainy season and typhoid outbreaks are a recurring problem in the area.
