On 8 November 2013, the Philippines was hit by typhoon Haiyan. Leyte and Eastern Samar are the worst affected areas where severe damage has been reported, although other areas have also been damaged. The densely populated areas of metropolitan Manila and Cebu City have not been badly affected.
Travel and communications infrastructure have been severely disrupted. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) report that it is difficult to travel to or contact these areas and the disruption is expected to continue for a number of days at least. British nationals in the affected regions should continue to follow the advice of local emergency authorities.
