Chikungunya Virus Infection in Indonesia

An outbreak of chikungunya virus infection has been reported by the media in Sudimoroharjo village, Nganjuk regency, East Java. Hundreds of villagers have attended the local health centre for treatment of similar symptoms. Numbers of cases have not been mentioned in this report, however, medical staff at the health centre report that around 75% of villagers are reporting symptoms of chikunguya virus infection.

This year (2013) cases of chikunguya virus infection haveĀ also been reported in other areas of Indonesia, including: Bali, West Sumatra, Central Jave and West Java.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
