Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever in India

05 December 2013

Outbreaks of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) are increasing in Gujarat; the first state to report on the prevalence of the disease in India.

Between 2011-2013, there have been 30 confirmed cases and 14 deaths due to CCHF. Of those, half were reported in a cattle-rearing community known as the Bharwads.

The first case of CCHF was detected in Kolat village near Ahmedabad in January 2011. There were 4 outbreaks of CCHF in 2011 and 2 during 2012. However, in 2013, 8 outbreaks of CCHF have been reported to date.

Currently there are 14 sites in Gujarat from where CCHF has been reported.

Advice for Travellers

CCHF is a low risk for the average traveller; it is spread by infected ticks from a reservoir usually in animals such as cattle, sheep and goats. Avoidance of tick bites is essential in risk areas.
