An increase in pertussis cases during 2013, has been reported from several areas of the United States (US). In the state of Texas a total of 3482 cases including 3 deaths have been reported as of 16 Dec 2013. San Diego County in the state of California has recorded a 50% increase in pertussis cases in 2013, with 334 cases, compared with 165 in 2012. The state of Ohio has reported a 20% increase in pertussis cases in 2013, with 901 cases compared with 742 during the same time period of 2012.
Smaller pertussis outbreaks are being reported from other states: Wood County in Wisconsin, Phillips County, Colorado, Bannock County, Idaho and Lancaster County in Pennsylvania.
Advice for Travellers
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of pertussis vaccine in accordance with the UK schedule. The JCVI does not recommend pertussis boosters for adults in the UK.
