A new outbreak of cholera has been reported in the city of Sange, South Kivu province. As of 7 January 2014, 80 cases including 2 deaths have been reported within the last 8 days in the city. Contaminated drinking water is thought to be the source of the infection and those inhabiting the city have been advised to boil all water before consumption.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
