Nipah Virus Infection in Bangladesh

Cases of  Nipah virus infection have been reported from Bangladesh following the confirmation of 2 recent deaths from the infection and 4 more suspected fatal cases. Laboratory tests at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) confirmed the two fatal cases in Shibaloy and Ghior of Manikganj district at the end of December 2013.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should be made aware of the risk of Nipah encephalitis in Bangladesh, particulary if visiting between January-April. Travellers should be advised to refrain from drinking raw date sap.
