An outbreak of measles has been reported in Guinea; since November 2013, 37 cases have been reported in the capital city of Conakry. The number of cases has been increasing in recent weeks and one child has died as a result of measles. The worst affected municipalities are Matam, Matoto and Ratoma. Cases have also been reported from other areas of the country, including the prefectures of Boke, Coyah, Dubreka, Kissidougou and Mandiana.
An immunisation campaign is being arranged to target more than 1.6 million at risk children. The Guinea government, UNICEF, WHO and MSF will be working together to contain the outbreak by speedy immunisation coverage.

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
