Cholera in Colombia (Suspected)

A suspected outbreak of cholera has been reported from Choco department in the west of Colombia. The suspected outbreak is among the indigenous population of Pangala reserve. Three children have died from severe diarrhoea and vomiting and 10 other suspected cases are reporting similar symptoms.

A medical team has been dispatched to the area to confirm if the outbreak is cholera. If cholera is confirmed, a health emergency will be declared.

Advice for Travellers

This suspected outbreak is in an isolated area, unlikely to be visited by travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
