An outbreak of measles is ongoing in Kursk region in the southwest of European Russia. Around 90 cases have been recorded in a community where vaccination is refused because of religious beliefs.
Measles cases were reported from 58 regions of the Russian Federation during 3013. Most cases were in unvaccinated individuals and around 45% were children. Small outbreaks occurred within several schools in the Astrakhan region in southern European Russia.
In the Republic of Dagestan, measles cases have been reported among the Roma population in the regions of: Ryazan, Yaroslavl, Tula, Kaluga, Orenburg, Saratov and Nizhny Novgorod. Also in the Republics of Bashkortostan and Adygea in the Stavropol Territory.
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
