The media has reported an outbreak of cholera in Makurdi, the capital of Benue state, mid-east Nigeria. The outbreak was identified around two weeks ago and approximately 300 individuals have received treatment at hospitals around the capital. Twenty individuals have reportedly died as a result of cholera in this outbreak. The majority of cases have occurred in the Wadata area of the capital; a slum dwelling bordered by the Benue river.

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
