The Ministry of Health for Uganda has confirmed an outbreak of meningitis in the country which began in January 2014. A total of 31 suspected cases have been identified, two of which have been laboratory confirmed by the public health laboratory.
The worst affected area is Adjumani district in northwestern Uganda with 14 cases, followed by Arua with 13 cases. A single case each has been reported in the neighbouring districts of Koboko and Maracha. Official confirmation by WHO and meningococcal serotype is awaited.
The Minstry of Health has dispatched a team of experts to support local health workers in the affected area and drug supplies have been released.
Uganda is a country at risk of meningococcal meningitis outbreaks and quadrivalent vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk.
