Two fatal human cases of rabies have been reported from Buleleng regency inĀ northern Bali. Both fatalities occurred in January 2014, the first was a 46-year-old who developed rabies after being bitten by a local puppy. The second case was a 7-year-old boy who was bitten by a dog at his home one month before he developed symptoms.
The rabies situation has improved in Bali but travellers should be aware of the ongoing risk and avoid animal contact and report any bites. Pre-exposure vaccination should be considered for those at increased risk.
