A suspected outbreak of anthrax has been identified in Barut, Nakuru county, in the Rift Valley. According to reports, two people have died and five others are unwell after having consumed the remains of a cow, suspected of dying from anthrax. The five individuals have been admitted to Rift Valley General Hospital with symptoms of cutaneous anthrax.
Advice for Travellers
The risk to travellers is low, most cases are of the cutaneous form and related to close contact with infected animals in rural areas. Anthrax can also be transmitted by consuming the meat of an infected animal. Avoidance of products made from animal origin such as souvenirs made from animal skins should be advised.
