The first autochthonus case of Zika virus infection (ZIKV) in the Americas has been confirmed in Easter Island, a Chilean territory located in the Pacific Ocean.
The case developed symptoms of ZIKV on 11 February 2014; infection is considered to be locally acquired. Following confirmation of the case, a retrospective investigation identified a further 40 possible cases. It is suspected that ZIKV may have been imported to Easter Island during January and Febraury 2014. During this time, visitors from other islands in the area affected by ZIKV attended the annual Tapati Festival, which attracts thousands of tourists to the cultural events.
The Chilean health authorities have increased surveillance by tracking and monitoring any cases of fever and rash on the island.
