Measles in Democratic Republic of Congo

10 March 2014

Two separate outbreaks of measles have been reported in Congo DR. The first is in Lusangi, Kabambare territory of Maniema in the east of the country. Since January 2014, 76 cases and two measles related deaths have been recorded. Many of the children in this part of the country remain unimmunised due to their parents' religious beliefs or superstitions.

The second outbreak has been reported from the south of the country. Since the beginning of 2014, 204 measles cases and two related deaths have been recorded in Likasi, Katanga province. The worst affected areas are Kikula and Kapolowe. A vaccination campaign has been arranged to begin on 11 March 2014.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
